Beyond Recognition

Artist:
Nadiah Bamadhaj. Born 1968, Malaysia. Lives and works in Malaysia.

Exhibit:
Beyond Recognition, 2006
Single channel video, 12:36 mins
Courtesy of Valentine Willie Gallery, Kuala Lumpur

In this video, Nadiah Bamadhaj inscribes text from Joseph Conrad's The Lagoon (1897) on the paradise-like landscape of Faroe Islands, Northern Europe. The text appears to pierce the skin of the pristine green; violence is insinuated on the land and we subconsciously feel the pain of history. In the meantime, we stay to read the text of Conrad, gleaning a fictional post-colonial narrative.
