Owlfly 1
Family: Ascalaphidae (Butterfly Flies)
Species: Ascaloptynx appendiculata ??
Common Name: (??)
Location: Turut Track
Owlflies are rather large *diurnal or *crepuscular insects resembling a dragonfly, have long knobbed antennae like a butterfly but are unrelated to either of them.
During the day, the adults rest on stems and twigs with the body, legs, and antennae pressed closed to the stem. In a few species, the abdomen is raised to look like a broken twig, similar to the one pictured here.
Note: *Diurnal insects are those that are active in the daytime. Crepuscular insects are those that are active during twilight (i.e. during dawn and dusk).
