In the middle compartment, I can put in my Canon Speedlite 420EX fully extended and a dust blower. Replacing the dust blower, I can even store a Canon EF100 Macro USM or a longer Canon EF70-300 IS USM tele-lens (about 168mm with front and rear caps, UV filter).
For the shallowest compartment, I can store a small zoom lens such as the Sigma 17-70 DC Macro with hood reversed, which is about 110mm in length including front and rear caps. Any length exceeding 140mm will be hard-pressed though.
