I'm a self-taught photographer shooting with a prosumer camera a few years ago. Back then, library books, online tutorials and the pictures' histograms were my constant guide.
Many techniques I fumbled and picked up in the field. "Knowledge is only part of understanding. Genuine understanding comes from hands-on experience," says Dr Seymour Papert, Professor of Learning Research (MIT, USA).
Better metering, focusing (especially in low light) and the ability to change lenses to suit a particular scenario pushes me into the realm of a dSLR.
