Scarlet Pygmy Mating (3 Stacks)

Family: Libellulidae (Skimmers & relatives)
Species: Nannophya pygmaea (Rambur, 1842)
Common Name: Scarlet Pygmy

Location: Tampines Mountain Biking Trail

This mating around noon was over in less than 3 minutes. The female then flew off to oviposit by dipping her abdomen tip to the water surface to wash off her eggs, while hovering or flying at full speed.

In the meantime, the male maintained a non-contact guarding ritual nearby, chasing off any other males that tried to grasp his ovipositing mate.
