(dragonflies and damselflies) The order Odonata, which is Latin for "toothed ones", is divided into two main suborders. Anisoptera (dragonflies) means "unequal wings", as the hindwings are larger and shaped differently than the forewings. Zygoptera (damselflies) means "equal wings", as the forewings and hindwings are about the same size and shape. The common name "dragonfly" refers to the whole order.
